Abstract:

The East Mediterranean region is influenced by contrasting phenomena and dynamics of the temperate zones of the extratropical Atlantic and Eurasia on the one hand and by the variability subtropical North African deserts and sub-Saharan monsoon zones on the other hand. Within the larger Mediterranean hotspot of climate change, the Eastern Mediterranean is a focal point of the projected regional drying that presents its inhabitants with dire future. The past climate of the region is frequented by extended intervals of drying that are imprinted in the well-studied sedimentary and geological record of the Dead Sea. Studies done with colleagues from Lamont and from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, of the Dead Sea level and sedimentary and geochemical record, provide evidence of the ways the Levant and the larger East Mediterranean responds to external forcing and global climate processes and carry implications for the region’s climate future.
