The late 20th and early 21st centuries have been characterized by the rapid growth of the urban population. This phenomenon is even more noticeable in Israel because of the wide-ranging demographics. Urban development in Israel is expected to double in the coming years and with it the need to decide on many conflicts between quantity and quality. As the concepts of sustainability expand, the controversy intensifies between the density of development and the approach of open green spaces in the city.

Neighborhood parks constitute the immediate and open green space available to most of the city's residents. In addition to offering many health and environmental benefits, neighborhood parks also have social functions in terms of mobility, meeting diverse populations, leisure and recreation activities, and giving people a sense of closeness to nature.

The aim of my research is to examine the effect of spatial properties of neighborhood parks on social functioning. Spatial characteristics are associated with their location within the urban street network and their geometric form. These properties are defined as global and local spatial characteristics. We use GIS technologies based on a 'space syntax' approach to calculate empirical metrics of centrality, integrative levels, and accessibility. These properties have a strong impact on movement-related uses, but they can impair the sense of calm and leisure. Global and local spatial characteristics have a complex effect on functioning that is likely to be influenced by the balance between characteristics and different levels of global and local centrality.

It is my hope that the results will contribute to our understanding of the spatial aspects of neighborhood gardens that enable diverse social functioning.  Furthermore, I am optimistic that it will provide planning tools based on measurable criteria to better integrate open green spaces in the city's spatial system.
