Abstract:
In the talk, I briefly review the basics of the magnetic field evolution in neutron stars and then focus on several specific issues. At first, I discuss evidence for an episode of magnetic field decay in radio pulsars at ages ~few 10^5 yrs. Then, I present a simple model explaining the possible existence of highly magnetized neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries.
After a brief discussion of magnetic field evolution in central compact objects, I advocate the hypothesis that the magnetic field evolution can explain anomalous braking indices of some radio pulsars and cooling neutron stars.
